Tarsal bones are a group of seven bones located in the foot between the tibia, fibula, and metatarsal bones. These bones collectively form the tarsus, which is the posterior part of the foot essential for its stability and movement. The tarsal bones are divided into two groups: the proximal and distal tarsal bones.
The proximal tarsal bones consist of the talus and the calcaneus. The talus, also known as the ankle bone, serves as the main link between the leg and the foot. It articulates with the tibia and fibula to form the ankle joint. The calcaneus, commonly referred to as the heel bone, is the largest tarsal bone. It supports the weight of the body and aids in walking and running.
