Melasma, also known as chloasma, is a common dermatological condition characterized by brown or gray-brown patches that typically appear on the face. These patches usually occur symmetrically on the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose, or upper lip. Melasma is more prevalent in women and individuals with darker skin tones, although it can affect people of all ethnic backgrounds.
The exact cause of melasma is not fully understood, but it is believed to be primarily influenced by hormonal factors, such as pregnancy or the use of hormonal contraceptives, as well as sun exposure. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can trigger the overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of our skin, leading to the formation of melasma patches. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can worsen the condition by stimulating melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, to create more pigment.
Melasma is generally considered a harmless condition but can cause emotional distress or self-esteem issues for some individuals. Treatment options for melasma include topical creams or gels containing ingredients like hydroquinone, retinoids, or corticosteroids. Chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser therapy, and light therapy are also commonly used to reduce the appearance of melasma. Additionally, patients are often advised to use broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF) and to avoid excessive sun exposure to prevent the worsening of melasma.
