The condition occurs due to damage to or dysfunction of the areas of the brain responsible for processing vision, such as the optic nerve, optic tract, or visual cortex. Hemianopia can be congenital (present from birth) or acquired later in life through trauma, stroke, tumor, or other neurological disorders.
Individuals with hemianopia may experience difficulty perceiving, recognizing, or reacting to visual stimuli on the affected side of their visual field. The extent of visual loss can vary, ranging from a slight decrease in peripheral vision to complete blindness on one side.
There are different types of hemianopia, including homonymous hemianopia, where the loss occurs on the same side of the visual field in both eyes, and heteronymous hemianopia, where the loss occurs on opposite sides of the visual field in both eyes.
