The greater rhomboid muscle originates from the spinous processes of the vertebrae T2 to T5 and inserts onto the medial border of the scapula, specifically between the spine of the scapula and the inferior angle. Its fibers run diagonally, angling downwards and laterally from their origin to the point of insertion.
The primary function of the greater rhomboid muscle is scapular retraction, which involves pulling the scapula closer to the spinal column.
