By blocking the activity of this enzyme, these drugs can reduce inflammation and relieve pain associated with various conditions such as arthritis and other inflammatory diseases. However, the inhibition of COX-1 by these drugs can have unwanted side effects, particularly on the gastrointestinal tract, which has led to the development of selective COX-2 inhibitors to minimize these adverse effects.
