Amapari virus was first identified in 2001 during an outbreak of encephalitis in the Amapari River region of the Brazilian Amazon.
The virus is primarily zoonotic, meaning it naturally circulates between animals and occasionally spills over to humans. While the exact natural reservoir of Amapari virus is still unknown, studies have identified several species of wild animals, including rodents and primates, as potential hosts. Etymology of AMAPARI VIRUS
The word Amapari virus is named after the Amapari region in Brazil, where the virus was first identified. The etymology of Amapari itself comes from the Tupi-Guarani language, spoken by indigenous populations in the region. Amapari is a combination of two words: ama, which means canoe, and pari, which means shell or palm leaf. Together, Amapari can be roughly translated to mean place of the canoes or river of the palm leaves.
